You bought a beautiful, expensive grinder. Now this is a favorite tool that you are going to use for its intended purpose - to cut metal. With the beginning of work, a lot of questions come about working with a grinder. Can it be used differently? Consider a few small tricks when working with her.

Which direction to turn the disc

If you have never worked with such a tool, then the first question that arises is which way it is spinning and where will the sparks fly?

This question gives rise to serious battles in networks. When sparks fly away from themselves, there is a danger of being hit by fragments of a circle when the disk is broken. Repeatedly published a video where a breaking disk flew in the direction opposite to the sparks. Usually there is the shin of the worker.

This means that the instrument is correctly positioned - when the disc rotates on you and sparks fly to your feet. In this case, the traction pulls the grinder from working. The disc must rotate clockwise!

Devices with disk sizes up to 150 mm can still be held in hands with unpredictable returns. Heavier and more powerful can fly out of hands, which will cause injury. The disks of most grinders already from the factory rotate in the right direction.

A protective suit will protect you from sparks flying at your feet. All professional carvers work that way. If your grinder is sawing the other way, move the handle 180 degrees. If it is impossible to change the direction of movement of the circle, you will have to work much more carefully, avoiding blows to the disk and biting it.

How to install a pen on a tool

The standard handle that comes with the tool is not always convenient. A powerful grinder is inconvenient to hold in your hands for a long time. In case of disk breakdowns, the device strives to “run away” from you. For convenience, the shape of the handle is redone independently.

The manufacturing procedure from a pipe segment with a diameter of 135 mm:

  1. Cut a sector equal to or slightly larger than the radius of the pipe.
  2. Between the ends of the cut, we weld a piece of a round pipe with a diameter of ½ inch with a length of 12-13 cm. In this case, the fist will completely fit on the handle even when the gauntlet is worn.
  3. We weld a bolt with a diameter of 14 mm and a length of 50 mm to the middle of the sector of a large pipe. It should go to the mounting hole of the standard handle.
  4. We leave the nut on the bolt - it will adjust the depth of screwing the handle fasteners.

Thus, you get a comfortable handle to hold the tool with a natural grip. Such a grip is much more convenient for long-term work - hands get tired less, it is easier to hold the grinder during bumps and sudden exits from the metal.

Do not use as a sharpener

In the midst of gardening, summer residents realize that the entire tool is not ground. Most often they grind plane cutters, choppers, knives, axes. Their sharpening requires a special machine, which not everyone has. Therefore, remember the grinder. Many have this building tool.

Sharpening can be done in some cases, subject to several conditions:

  1. Run the tool smoothly across the disk, without strong pressure and stops.
  2. At low speeds, the stone is cooled with a wet rag.
  3. Use the entire surface of the circle. Sharpening in one place will violate the reinforcement of the disk and it will fly apart.
  4. The priority is the creation of a cutting edge, rather than sharp sharpening.
  5. It is better to use not a cutting wheel, but a grinding wheel.

Cons of this method:

  1. Angle grinder even with a speed regulator does not provide high quality sharpening.
  2. The granularity of the discs, the inability to use a water bath turn the knife into a hacksaw.
  3. The disc rounds the edge.
  4. At high speeds, the metal overheats and weakens.
  5. The thick layer of the sharpened tool is removed.
  6. The possibility of annealing and weakening of the cutting edge increases.
  7. Sharpening is carried out in dangerous contact with a rotating disk.
You can grind a tool with a grinder only as a last resort. It is dangerous and ineffective. For constant use, use a sharpener. When mass sharpening, the sharpener should be equipped with a cooling and lubrication system.

We hope that these tips will once and for all teach you to handle the grinder correctly, which will help to avoid injuries, inconvenience in work and tool breakage.
