A screwdriver is such a universal tool that every time you never cease to be amazed at the unusual situation in which it can be used. So some craftsmen got to the point that they began to sharpen the chainsaw chain with it. And it turned out to be quite an effective way. Why overpay anyone for such a service, if it is quite possible to do it yourself.

Advantages and disadvantages of this method

I would immediately like to mention the indisputable advantages and disadvantages of this method of sharpening the chain.

Advantages:

  • simplicity and accessibility;
  • in the presence of a screwdriver, the chain can be sharpened even away from the household network;
  • speed of work.

Disadvantages:

  • it is difficult to observe the angle of sharpening;
  • the upper edge of the tooth is hardly sharpened, despite the fact that its lower part is sharpened significantly;
  • the file used will quickly become unusable;
  • there is a risk of chain breaking, as the connecting links are knocked down.

As you can see, this method has significant disadvantages. Nevertheless, with proper experience and accuracy of work, all shortcomings, with the exception of the wear of the file, will be canceled.

What will be required for work?

The main element in this work is a round file (not to be confused with a conical one!). Its diameter should correspond to the rounding of the tooth of the chainsaw. Often, a file with a diameter of 4.8 mm is quite suitable, but it is better to double-check it.

A bearing is also required. Any suitable, regardless of type: ball, roller, cylindrical. It is only important that it is convenient to hold in your hand.

And, of course, the screwdriver himself. Those who do not have such a tool can use an electric drill, but for this work it is better to use a screwdriver. It is recommended to use a tool with adjustable speed.

How to sharpen?

Preparatory work

First of all, you should remove the edge of the file, which is designed to be clamped in a wooden handle - it is not needed. You can just cut it off with a grinder.

Now you need to make a sleeve connecting the edge of the file and the inner ring of the bearing. It can be made from absolutely any material at hand, wood or plastic. It is important that it compresses the file tightly and fits tightly into the bearing itself.

The free edge of the file is inserted into the chuck of the power tool and locked. A convenient tool for sharpening the chain is ready.

As for the chainsaw itself, it is better to clamp its tire in a yew, so that during sharpening it was absolutely static. You can also just conveniently put the tool on a work bench, but it’s easier to cut the angle of sharpening.

Chain sharpening

Before the work itself, it is recommended to mark the link from which sharpening began. This can be done with a marker or a piece of masking tape.

So, the file is immersed in a rounding. At the same time, it should be clearly oriented at the right angle. It is very important! Often on the outside of the teeth there are special notches indicating the desired angle. If they are, you should keep the file strictly parallel to them. Also, if there is no risk, you can visually determine the angle of 30 degrees relative to the tire and stick to it.

The sharpening device should be held with two hands - one by the bearing, the other by the screwdriver so that the nozzle does not lead to the sides. When sharpening, the nozzle should be pressed lightly against the teeth. For each individual link you need to spend no more than two seconds. Thus, it is necessary to sharpen every link and everything, the chain is sharpened.

With this method, you can sharpen the chain of the chainsaw yourself. Most importantly, do not forget about safety.
