Sometimes, when you insert a USB flash drive into a USB port, the laptop or computer does not “see” it. If the device itself is working properly, then the problem is the card reader slot. How to fix this situation? Let's get it together.

Step 1: check ports

The most common reason a flash drive cannot be read is commonplace dirt on the contacts. Dust accumulates inside the holes when they are not covered with special plugs. Well, if so: repair is not required.

Take a flashlight, shine on the port. If you see dirt - remove its pieces with a toothpick. Then use your old toothbrush to remove any residue.

When a card is inserted into a USB hub connected to a PC with a cable, it is possible that the thin wire has broken in some place. The problem is solved by replacing the defective cable.

If the inserted flash card moves too easily in the slot and even falls out of it, there is a physical port defect. It is treated only by replacing it with a new slot.

Step 2: reboot the device

It happens that on your PC a bug slipped that blocked the operation of USB connectors. Do what all normal people do when they encounter a computer glitch: restart it.

Rescanning the ports when the device is turned on may fix the problem of reading the memory card. After all, at startup, a command is received to reset and clear unsaved memory, processor, controllers and peripheral devices.

Step 3: update the controller

If step # 2 did not help, proceed to restart the controller manually. It is necessary to do as follows.

  1. Find “Device Manager” and open it. It’s easier to do this:
    • hold Win + R keys;
    • we write the command: devmgmt.msc.
  2. Open the tab “USB controllers”, then click on the line from the list containing the phrase “USB host controller” or in English “Host Controller USB”.
  3. Select the action “Update hardware configuration”.
  4. Now check if the memory card ports are working.

If you did not find USB controllers among the devices, then you need to update the configurations of all the offered devices.

Step 4: turn on USB manually

To complete this action, you must reconfigure the BIOS. Sometimes it independently disables the operation of USB ports. You need to proceed step by step:

  1. simultaneously clamp the keys: Delete, F2, Esc, etc .;
  2. select the Advanced tab;
  3. Click on the USB Configuration item.

If the Enabled sign is lit, then the USB inputs are connected.

These methods are really working. They have repeatedly proved their effectiveness. Good luck everyone!
