During his speech at the Russian-Chinese EXPO, held in Harbin, Maxim Akimov said that the first commercial fifth-generation mobile networks will be built in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kazan.

We are talking about the implementation of the national project Digital Russia, in which within 4 years about 97% of households (at least 100 Mbit / s) will have access to broadband Internet, and 5G commercial networks will be built in all million-plus cities to ensure:

  • excellent communication quality;
  • one million connections per sq km at an average data transfer rate of up to 1 Gb / s;
  • connection delay up to 1 m / s;
  • high energy efficiency;
  • safety for humans.

At present, the Russian government, according to the politician, has been tasked with resolving the issue with the allocation of the radio frequency range, which must be resolved by 2021. After that, construction of 5G commercial networks will begin in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kazan, where pilot zones of a new format are already operating.

The government intends to leave the priority in the implementation of the national project Digital Russia to domestic companies, despite negotiations currently underway on the supply of equipment with Chinese manufacturers.

According to Maxim Akimov, the decision to attract Russian companies and vendors will not affect the quality of commercial networks. The fifth generation of mobile communications will meet all international standards, despite the localization of some of the solutions in Russia.

Therefore, according to the Deputy Prime Minister, there is no doubt about the implementation of the national project Digital Russia within the specified time frame. Moreover, the government is doing everything possible to ensure that the cost of this service is available to all Russians.

By the way, not all experts are sure that Russia is ready for such a rapid development of the new telecommunication standard, since 5G users run the risk of facing serious problems. In particular, the choice of smartphones for this communication format is currently significantly limited.
